Environmental variation shapes and links parasitism to sexual selection

چکیده

Parasite-driven population divergence in hosts can be exacerbated by environmental factors affecting host parasitism, as well increasing sexual selection against parasitized hosts. Environmental influence parasitism directly parasite survival, and indirectly condition, which turn shape selection. To disentangle these potential alternative paths, we used a damselfly (host) - water mite (parasite) system to examine how drive heterogeneity across populations the strength of acting males. We found substantial populations, driven mainly lake pH, density. Although this did not translate into variation selection, density predatory fish increased strength, likely through effects on condition. These results imply that alone may cause differences but when linked with underlying conditions, increase More broadly, suggest elucidating requires consideration intwined ecological processes.

Sexual selection explains more functional variation in the mammalian major histocompatibility complex than parasitism.

Understanding drivers of genetic diversity at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is vitally important for predicting how vertebrate immune defence might respond to future selection pressures and for preserving immunogenetic diversity in declining populations. Parasite-mediated selection is believed to be the major selective force generating MHC polymorphism, and while MHC-based mating p...

Sexual Selection and Human Geographic Variation

Among early modern humans, a woman would face stronger competition for a mate the further away she was from the equator. Men were less available because they 1) hunted over longer distances that increased male mortality proportionately and 2) were less able to offset the resulting man shortage through polygyny. The longer the winter, the costlier it became to provision a second wife and her chi...

Sexual selection shapes development and maturation rates in Drosophila.

Explanations for the evolution of delayed maturity usually invoke trade-offs mediated by growth, but processes of reproductive maturation continue long after growth has ceased. Here, we tested whether sexual selection shapes the rate of posteclosion maturation in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We found that populations maintained for more than 100 generations under a short generation ti...

Environmental Variation and Selection on Performance Curves1

SYNOPSIS. Many aspects of physiological and organismal performance vary with some continuous environmental variable: e.g., photosynthetic rate as a function of light intensity; growth rate or sprint speed as a function of temperature. For such ‘performance curves’, the environment plays two roles: it affects both the levels of performance expressed, and the relationship between performance and ...

Relation Between RNA Sequences, Structures, and Shapes via Variation Networks

Background: RNA plays key role in many aspects of biological processes and its tertiary structure is critical for its biological function. RNA secondary structure represents various significant portions of RNA tertiary structure. Since the biological function of RNA is concluded indirectly from its primary structure, it would be important to analyze the relations between the RNA sequences and t...
